The New Corvera Airport, Murcia

It’s OPEN! The “NEW” but late Corvera Airport (Murcia International) is about a 1 hour drive from the Hondon Valley. This now gives Hondón residents and local visitors more options for flights (see below), travel and indeed promises to open up the Spanish property and work market. (Note in April 2019 there is a proposed name change to Juan de la Cierva Airport – [ link ])

The village of Corvera is 25 minutes inland between the cities of Murcia, Costa Calida and Cartagena so tourists and homeowners on the coast like the Mar Menor and in Orihuela Costa will have a longer transfer time than they did from old airport atSan Javier. However, the increased choice of airlines and the frequency of flights should more than make up for this.

Of course it is still early days as to how this airport will impact on both tourism and the regional property market, but we are hopeful and excited as Hondón Villas have noticed over the last year or so, more property enquiries and listings towards that way.

Sadly, it has meant the small (military) San Javier airport has now ceased all commercial operations. And the promised Paramount theme park will not be built near-by, due to the long delays. Alicante Airport remains more convenient to our local area (about 35 minutes). However, Corvera airport still promises to become a major gateway to south east Spain (Murcia and Alicante regions). However the early signs are that Air services are slowly taking shape, as is the on-site facilities.

Having lived in Spain for about 15 years now we know Corvera was on the radar back then. But, sadly, Corvera has had a chequered history. Many businesses invested in the area on the strength of this important infrastructure and the proposed economic boost, particularly for the golf resorts, hospitality & entertainment industries. The airport started construction about 10 years ago and took 4 years to build. So sadly, it stood idle for 6 years despite many commercial and political attempts to get the airport up and running mush sooner.

The good news: in January 2019, the Murcia International Airport in Corvera was opened by King Felipe of Spain. The occasion was marked by the touch-down of its first commercial flight – a Ryanair service from the East Midlands.

It would seem for the immediate future the airport will cater for northern Europeans coming to Spain, their key market. Like Ryanair, EasyJet has also launched UK flights to Murcia International and other airlines due to start routes include TUI, Norwegian Air and Jet2. The frequency will be ramped up in time for the summer 2019. There are plans and capacity to take flights from other international links and further afield. Also the airport can take larger aircraft than San Javier which should mean more visitors to the area.

As for Corvera airport facilities, these are sparse at the time of writing but will increase as traffic improves. Covering 37,000 square metres, there are 24 check-in counters, 9 boarding gates, a few shops, cash machines, wi-fi, parking, taxis, bus services, car hire and hotel possibilities. [ Visit the Corvera website for up-to-date details of facilities and flights ] If you use the airport let us now what you think?

The Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena, Novelda

The Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena is a beautiful ornate Catholic Church located in just outside Novelda Town (near Alicante), Valencia, Spain.

Coordinates Map: https://goo.gl/maps/hQijtfcSrzM2
Usage: Worship Catholic Church
Diocese: Orihuela-Alicante
Construction: 1918-1946, Valencian Modernism architectural style (Gaudi)
Architect: José Sala

“The most beautiful things I have seen in a very long time. Absolutely lovely. So worth the visit with friends and family. All enjoyed the experience. “

It was built from a project designed by the novel engineer José Sala Sala, 1 2 with a certain inspiration in the modernist style of Antonio Gaudí. Later the construction was executed by the masters of works Noveldenses Ceferí Escolano and Antoni Amorós. It is a very unique and outstanding work within Valencian modernism.

The building bears a distant resemblance to the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona by Antonio Gaudí. It has a jug shape, symbolizing the jug that the Saint brought as a balm to Jesus. This original form is also unique in the world.

Its construction, begun in 1918, required three phases (one of them paralysis), to terminate the work in 1946. Different resources were used to finance the works, such as the Zarzuela lyrical galas in which the director intervened orchestral Asterio Mira, the Nortenden baritone Eduardo Mateo-Quirant and his wife, Josefina Landete (both parents of Paloma Mairant), among others.3

On the main façade there are two 25 m lateral towers. of height culminated by a stony cross, which is also found in the dome and on the upper arches of the façade. Decorative motifs have antecedents in the medieval, baroque styles and in nature itself. These influences led the author to combine pebbles from the Vinalopó River, polychrome tiles, red bricks, masonry, etc., which are reflected throughout the exterior of the building.

The interior of the sanctuary is composed of a rectangular central nave with two attached side spaces; At the end, in the apse, is the dressing room of Santa María Magdalena, patron saint of Novelda, and behind the altar you can admire a beautiful painting attributed to Gastón Castelló. Since the late twentieth century is planned and is proceeding slowly to the incorporation of an organ built entirely in marble, work of the innovative organ maker and artist Ivan Larrea, who will become the only one in the world with these characteristics.

The Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena of Novelda is the place that many couples choose to get married and baptize their children. It is a place with a lot of history for the Noveldens since here the election of grapes that will accompany Santa María Magdalena in the procession of July 22, day of the patron saint is also celebrated. It is also interesting to note that, for several years, they lived in a building next to the Sanctuary, the Dominican Sisters. Three years ago they went to another region of Spain. In the place where they lived, a hostel and a thematic centre are being set up.

His excellent work can be seen on YouTube but he now has his own video website “Hondon Home TV”. It is very good indeed and shows many a fiesta and social event for the area and well worth a look.

So well done to Jan and thank you for your excellent community spirit.

Bodegas Cerda… the local Wine Merchant

We love the wine in Spain – and at about €1.25 per litre from the local Bodegas it is a absolute bargain!!

Wine Merchant in Hondon

In the Hondon Valley and beyond we have a nice array of wine growers wine merchants to choose from but the most spectacular one has to be Bodegas Cerda in Hondon de las Nieves. This building could grace any major town or city. It is a working producer and seller of many wine varieties to suite all pockets. As well as a museum to Hondon’s wine producing history it has an audio / visual room for tourists and educational trips.

The cobbled court yard is an ideal place to sample the wines with local tapas, cheeses and cured hams.

If you have not visited it yet … please do so as you will not be disappointed! It is truly the prize of Hondon’s architecture.

BREXIT? What to do next?

We recently attended and made notes at a local meeting in Hondón de los Frailes about BREXIT.  This was organised by the British Consulate, Alicante division. Our notes are below which may help some of you.

BREXIT for Expats in Spain

Yes, the situation as we write (Nov’ 2018) is still very fluid and subject to change and as yet there is no deal/ a deal is agreed between the UK and EU.

However, with time running out Brits abroad are worrying what they should do!

Of course Hondon Villas are no experts on what actually will happen, nor are we privy to any more information than anyone else. But we try to keep an eye on what could happen to protect our business and help new and existing clients.

With that in mind here are the things we picked out from the talk…

AIM of the Talk: For British citizens living in Spain to be ready for Brexit.

Citizens rights:
Brits that are over living here ‘legally’ can continue to do so as normal.
To be ‘legal’ you must hold a residencia. You can have lived here for less than 5 years but you still need a residencia.

Health Care:
If you have health care already in Spain via a S1 (pensioners) then you can continue to do so. If you have healthcare in Spain through any other means i.e S I P card then this continues also. The European health card ( EHIC) should not be used if you are living here permanently.

Time frames:
To achieve legal status (residencia) before December 2020 (if a deal is reached). To achieve legal status (residencia) before March 31st (if a deal is not reached).

Part time residents:
Maybe difficult for them to do 6 months Spain/UK. This group may have to choose which country they want to be resident in! Nothing has been agreed in the negotiations so far but may mean that if you are not resident legally in Spain there could be restrictions on the period of time they can reside per year.

Driving License:
Should not be driving on a UK driving license if living in Spain. You need a Spanish Driving license.

False info/scaremongering:
Anything written on any platform other than the Gov.UK site is not true.

Voting rights:
This was not included in the Brexit negotiations. However Spain and the British consulate are in discussions so hopefully Brits legally living in Spain will be able to vote in the local Spanish elections soon.

Spain/difficulties in registering:
This can be described as a bureaucratic country with regards getting your documents especially your residencia. However, this in the long term is good thing as it gives you a good footprint in Spain.

Gestores:
Due to the difficult nature/red tape of some of the paperwork needed to obtain some documents, the Spanish tend to use a Gestor who can, for a cost, sort out everything that is needed. Recommended, especially if yout Spanish is poor.

Facebook page ‘Brits in Spain’

Citizens Advice Spain – a voluntary website to help foreigners in Spain.

Brexpats– Formed to assist the Brits during Brexit. Not for/against Brexit just works with the consulate to help get info out to Brits in Spain. Brexpats is a legal and regulated association in Spain with 5,500 members to date. They also work with international lawyers and are hopeful that they can achieve the voters rights for Brits in Spain to vote in local elections.
Join : More members needed to increase their voice!

The message clearly was to make sure you are a legal British citizen in Spain before Brexit….the only way to achieve this is to have all your documentation but most importantly your residencia.

As we do not know as yet whether there is going to be a deal…I guess it would be sensible to recommend that we all get our paperwork sorted before March 31st 2019.

I hope this is helpful to you. Please consult official channels and not the local bar-room chitter. You can share your experiences on the Hondon Villas Facebook page

WOW! Aerial Videos for the Hondón Property Market

Hondón Villas are excited to announce that we are the first local Hondón agent to offer stunning & legal drone videography* to our exclusive vendors.

You can see our first batch of aerial videos on our YouTube channel which are already receiving positive reviews.
» Watch Hondon Drone Videos on YouTube … read more below!

If you have seen any aerial videos you will understand that showcasing a property from the air can look stunning and show off not only the house and land from a different perspective but also the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Buyer’s love them and it can be another tool to help sell your house!

SO AN EXCLUSIVE SALES OPPORTUNITY for motivated sellers!

After about three years of researching the possibility and understanding the impact of using this exciting drove technology we think the time is right to offer it to suitable vendors and properties (it’s not for everyone and is subject to stringent AESA / EU flying laws). But the recent changes in Spanish drone laws and that we can now use a fully registered & trained Drone Pilot* , allows us to offer a legal aerial photography service to suitable Hondon Valley property vendors.

It’s early days with this area of photography and video but for sure some properties are ripe for aerials. We look forward to helping you sell your house.

» Contact our Office in Hondon de los Frailes if you are interested and motivated to sell your house with the No.1 agent in the area.

*Commercial drone flights are subject to a some flight restrictions, a safety audit of the property location, insurance and suitable sales conditions – ask us for details.  Commercial Drones Pilots need a licence to fly, 4 days minimum training, a medical certificate and liability insurance.

WOW! Millions Know about Hondón

Our IT people are telling us that our very own Hondon Villas websites have passed the 1.5 million visitors mark. INCREDIBLE to think we are such a small area and a real estate niche for inland Spain.

Record sale and visitors in 2018

To think that when we arrived in Hondon, Spain 13 years ago, there was no information on the web about the Hondón Valley. (even Google hadn’t found it back then LOL!) Yet the area still retains the same Spanish charm and has changed little really. For sellers this is great news as the local economy thrives on property sales and a new influx of buyers looking for that typically tranquil Spanish country lifestyle.

What’s more… that figure does no include the 10,000’s of visitors to our international portals and marketing partners, like A Place in the Sun, Right Move, Kyero, Prime Location and more. WOW again!

So selling through Hondon Villas gets you plenty of exposure, maybe that’s one of the reasons why we sell more houses in the area than any other local agent!

Thank you from a VERY HAPPY TEAM!

Elche Firework Night 2018

On the night of the 13th of August, Elche celebrates la Nit de l’Albà…

AMAZING! CRAZY …. 1000’s of rockets and the finale “La Palma” is beyond words … the biggest firework you will ever see launched from the main Basilica. If you have not been THEN GO! … or go again but get there very early has Elche is crammed full around the old town.

On that night, you’ll witness thousands of fireworks and the night sky is ablaze with light, colour and sound.

This is a highly characteristic festival of the city and has its origin in the Middle Ages, where families used to make offerings to the Virgin by way of a rocket launched for each of their respective children. Currently, that tradition has turned into the setting off of hundreds of palm style fireworks that are launched in a coordinated and alternating way from different points of the city. Furthermore, the citizens purchase and set off fireworks individually and in a spontaneous fashion during the shower of light that characterises the “night of fire”.

The rockets and the fireworks take place at about 23:00 onwards and cease barely minutes before the clock strikes midnight. At that moment, the fireworks cease and the lights of the city are turned off and the people of Elche wait in silence for the culminating moment of the night, while in the background we can hear the most significant musical fragment of the Misteri d’Elx: “the Gloria Patri”. Amidst the utter darkness of the night, we see the Palm of the Virgin, a huge palm represented by white light which is launched from the Basilica of Santa María, and which for some seconds, lights up the skies, above the city of Elche magnificently.

After this magic moment, the light come back on and in the tower of the Basilica, a small “virgin of fire” appears as we listen to the famous habanera “Aromas ilicitanos” and all of the local folk join in and sing it from their terraces and balconies.

To conclude, there is a tradition of celebrating the end by eating watermelon. Some locals will continue to set off fireworks well into the night. Other locals, the most daring, will participate in the traditional “guerra de carretillas”, a mock fight with firecrackers in a place in the town centre specially fenced for it, only for those who are passionate about fire.
