A Quick Guide to Albatera

Albatera (see Google Map), an historic Spanish City and municipality located close to the Vega Baja del Segura. It is in the province of Alicante, part of the Valencian Community on the Costa Blanca South, Spain. Albatera comes from the words “Alba”, meaning Spanish and “Terra”, meaning land. Albatera basically means “Spanish Land”.

Albatera Town Hall: The Albatera Ayuntimiento have more information online:
» More about Albatera here: Albatera Tourist Information or try here.

Geography: Albatera has an area of 66.5 km2 and according to the last census 2005, has an approx’ population of 12,000 inhabitants. It is near to the towns of Crevillente, Orihuela, San Isidro (Train Station), Catral and Cox.

The closest airport to Albatera is Alicante (L’Altet) at around 38 kilometres (35 minutes drive), although San Javier Airport (Murcia) is also easily drivable. The postcode for Albatera is 03340. Road access to Albatera is usually the E-15 (A-7) and N-340 roads.

Weather and Economy: The climate is typical Mediterranean, with an average annual temperature of 19ºC, reaching 30+ in the summer with over 300 days of sunshine per year. The economy of Albatera is mainly based on trading “confección costura” (Clothing Manufacture) and farming/agriculture. You cannot fail to spot the acre upon acre of crops such as lemons, oranges, figs and olives… and they are delicious!

Culture and Events: The population are mostly Castilian speakers, although there is a push to speak the Valencian language now. The main town hosts mainly Spanish, Hispanics and North Africans. However, the surrounding “Campo” has many homes of retired northern Europeans such as the British and Dutch who own either holiday villas or have migrated for the “Spanish Dream”.

Catholic Church:The most important and central monument in the city is the baroque Catholic church built in 1727 which is the centre piece of the main Plaza. Also important is the Sanctuary of the Patroness of the Virgen del Rosario or Aurora, who is celebrated on the first Sunday of October by the “Brotherhood of Our Lady”. Albatera has a long history of cultural tradition such as traditional music, with two local bands, a choir and parish choirs.

Fiestas: Albatera, like many Spanish cities/towns, offer a week of Fiestas for the community (the whole family can join in). The main and colourful parade event being the “Moors and Christians”, which are spectacular, a “must see”. The Semana Santa (Easter) is also a very religious and a busy time for the city. The festivities in honour of the town’s patron St. James, are usually held the week of July 25th. Albatera is still developing with the construction in recent years of the House of Culture in the “Parque de la Huerta” (30,000 m2), the House of Music and more sports facilities (including a new public outdoor pool).

Nature: As Albatera is surrounded by mountains and natural parks (Parque de Montana) it boasts excellent outdoor activities such as walking/hiking such as the “Rambla de la Sal”, cycling and shooting sports. They have also recently built an outdoor communal swimming pool.

Hondon Valley? On yer Bike!

Almost without fail many Spanish cycle clubs visit the Hondón area each weekend. The local mountains are ideal for cycling, mountain bikes or walking enthusiasts. And Hondón has been part of the country’s major tour “Vuelta España” tour.

Bike Ride. Albatera to Hondón

These are serious “peddle pushers”, all geared up, with bikes that probably cost a few months wages. They most often come over the very long and steep Albatera mountain ranges into the About the Hondón Valley. That’s one hell of a climb (even for a car) so it requires a very good level of fitness. They then stop off at the local bars and restaurants in Frailes & Nieves for refreshment and a rest. It gives the villages a real buzz on weekend mornings.

Bike Ride Alicante CoastNow on to the coast ... Do you fancy a relaxing cycle ride overlooking the Mediterranean sea? This 26-km (16-mile) route from San Juan beach through El Campello village is ideal for bikers of all ages. Get to the finish line and cool down at Coveta Fuma cove before taking the tram back to the city center.

Albatera, Alicante Region

Exciting Developments of Albatera Village by James Purefoy (Go Articles)

The village of Albatera is located in Vega Baja in Alicante province. Its population is barely 9,000 with many speaking Spanish and a little Catalan. Albatera is easily accessible from many Spanish towns and cities such as Alicante and Murcia.

Albatera offers many beautiful views from Sierra de Crevillent Mountains and River Segura. Its pleasant Mediterranean climate and little rainfall attract many tourists to this idyllic village.

Development from history

Albatera came under Alicante province in the year 1833; it indulged in agriculture with River Segura assisting in its irrigation needs. However, pig farming flourished and became a strong contributor to Albatera’s economy. » Albatera Villas for Sale

Today, more industries have been established and these overshadowed many of the traditional economies. However, there are numerous irrigation channels and canals available to water the village’s agricultural plots. Hence, vegetable produce such as dates and lemons grow healthily.

Albatera’s history is rich with the many artefacts uncovered. These findings confirmed the village’s pre-historic civilizations that stretched back to 3rd century BC. The Romans came and set up the village’s irrigation channels to cultivate the land. The Arabs came during the 5th century until Alfonso X re-conquered Albatera in 1266.

Church of Albatera

There is an ancient 1729 parochial church at the plaza centre in honour of the local saint, Apostle Santiago. The plaza also houses the town hall and old casino.
Modernization

Albatera continued to flourish naturally with palm trees along its streets amidst whitewashed houses which are typical of Mediterranean villas in Albatera. There is plenty of beauty nature around Albatera.

Albatera has plenty of plains, wetlands, mountains and parks. The village’s park is called Park of Orchards; it spans 30,000 square meters and houses beautiful trees and plants in the midst a lake and a fountain. There are plenty of designated walking routes in and around Albatera.

Albatera has developed a modern resort for golf and sports such as shooting, tennis and riding. The village has also built many excellent Spanish schools as part of its modernization to education although the village folks maintain its steep traditions and good Spanish values.

Many fiestas and festivals continued to be celebrated as with most Spanish towns and villages on fiestas. One of the more exciting fiestas celebrated in Albatera is the July St. James festival. It is a combination of Moorish and Christian traditions which is celebrated over a week long where there are many brave young local men trying their hand in bull running and bull fighting.

WOW! Millions Know about Hondón

Our IT people are telling us that our very own Hondon Villas websites have passed the 1.5 million visitors mark. INCREDIBLE to think we are such a small area and a real estate niche for inland Spain.

Record sale and visitors in 2018

To think that when we arrived in Hondon, Spain 13 years ago, there was no information on the web about the Hondón Valley. (even Google hadn’t found it back then LOL!) Yet the area still retains the same Spanish charm and has changed little really. For sellers this is great news as the local economy thrives on property sales and a new influx of buyers looking for that typically tranquil Spanish country lifestyle.

What’s more… that figure does no include the 10,000’s of visitors to our international portals and marketing partners, like A Place in the Sun, Right Move, Kyero, Prime Location and more. WOW again!

So selling through Hondon Villas gets you plenty of exposure, maybe that’s one of the reasons why we sell more houses in the area than any other local agent!

Thank you from a VERY HAPPY TEAM!
